Ready to pucker up for the New Year? Well this month’s flight is sure to help you out! I’ll be serving up an entire flight of amazing sour beers! Whether you love love love sour beers or are just curious to learn more about this unique style of beers, you’re not gonna want to miss this one! These are some beers that we’ve been working on getting our hands on and then saving for just this occasion. Being able to taste all of these beers in a flight at the low cost of $12 is the BEST way to kick off the new year!

Mandoline Grill will be serving up some delicious eats that will go great with the kick of the sour beers, so be sure to show up both thirsty and hungry!

‘Tis the season for celebration! Whether you’re celebrating with your family, your friends, your co-workers, or just celebrating life, it’s always more festive with a proper beer! Come and get some ideas for delicious beers to use during the upcoming holiday parties, get gift ideas to your favorite beer drinkers, or just to have a little time to enjoy yourself before the holiday madness. Whatever the reason, this is a really fun flight of some of my favorite beers that you won’t want to miss.

A flight of beers worth celebrating: since we had a flight of holiday beers in October, this flight will not be Christmas beers, but rather an exploration of great beers that are perfect to give as gifts and to use at all types of celebrations! We’ll explore a variety of styles of beers, all of which are very special and perfect to share with or gift to your loved ones during the holidays or any celebration!

The cost will be $12 and includes a flight of these delicious beers, a flight sheet and of course some QT with your favorite beer drinking girlfriends! Also, since some of these beers are pretty strong, we’re pairing up with a female-owned food truck so be sure to come thirsty and hungry. Hope to see you all there!

Hey ladies!

The holidays are quickly approaching and we all need some ideas of what to serve up for the holiday feasts! And yay, have I got a plan for that!!

I’m super excited to have Alex and Evan from Hot Knivez, (super spectacular cookbook authors and cheese gurus) out to our women’s forum this month to pair up some phenomenal cheeses with an amazing flight of beers. How better to impress your family and friends during the holidays than by putting together a perfect pairing at the holiday table or giving someone the best tasting gift basket ever!

We will present 5 beers and 5 cheeses, with emphasis on smoked flavors, for this event to prevent your holiday meals from going up in smoke. Ha ha ha ha! The cost will be $17 and will include the flight of 5 beers and 5 cheeses, a flight sheet with info on the beers and cheeses, and some quality time with your favorite girlfriends. The event will be on Wednesday, November 16th, at the brewery from 7p-9p. Please rsvp on the website so that I know how much beer and cheese to have on hand for the event. October’s Forum falls during L.A. Beer Week. Yay! To celebrate beer week, we have special guests Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune – The Beer Chicks. These two amazing ladies have been in the forefront of the beer scene in Los Angeles and wrote “The Naked Pint – An Unadulterated Guide To Craft Beer” which discusses all things beer.

These ladies have set up a special flight to present to you and I can’t wait for you to meet them. Come join us for an evening in celebration of L.A. Beer Week, drink some great beers, hang out with your best girlfriends, and maybe even get a book signed.

The cost of the event will be $15 and will include the flight of beers, a flight sheet, and a great time with your favorite ladies! Please RSVP so that we have a general headcount and know how much beer to order.

We’ll also have a female owned food truck, The Pnut Butter Bar Truck, out at the brewery that evening so be sure to come both thirsty and hungry! Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

In true German-style, we’re going to celebrate Oktoberfest in late September! I’ve got an amazing line-up of beers for you to try… and in standard fashion for the Women’s Forum, they’re not the typical German beers that you’ve all seen and tried. You’ll be trying all German microbrews, that are much more unique and complex in flavor.

It’s another really exciting flight of beers and, of course, we’ve got a female-owned food truck coming out that night as well. Let’s Be Frank will be out to the brewery serving up the best snacks to have with a good German beer, franks and sausages of course! So be sure to arrive both hungry and thirsty!

Come join in the exploration of rare German microbrews on Wednesday 9/21/11. The forum will start at 7p. The cost will be $15 and will include a flight sheet, the flight of amazing and rare German microbrews, and another great evening with the ladies. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Next up in the Beer Education series: Brettanomyces!

August 30, 2011. 7-9 PM

From “barnyard” to spice, pineapple to leather, these rouge yeasts produce a wild relm of alternative flavors in beer. Come learn about the little creatures, taste some amazing beers with pronounced brett character, and find out why winemakers tremble at the mere mention of the bugs.

This session will be more ‘tasting’ oriented than ‘technical homebrew’ and is geared toward all who love beer!

Summer’s in full swing and it’ll be gone before we know it. So while we still have the opportunity, let’s enjoy some refreshing Saisons before they get replaced by the more robust beers of the fall.

First of all, I just want to say thanks to everyone who has been so supportive of us in the last 18 months since we’ve opened.  And to everyone who has been inquiring about this new trip back to City Hall next week, in hopes to support us once again.  You all are the reason we have hope that LA might some day be considered a great city for Craft Beer.

Now I suppose I should just jump right into the details…Here’s what’s going on:

Over a year ago, when we were first granted our Conditional Use Permit (to serve beer to the public for on-site and off-site consumption), a land-owner in the neighborhood appealed the decision, and protested our land-use request.  Because of this appeal, we had to go through another public hearing to determine if the protester’s concerns were valid enough to overturn the decision and deny our Conditional Use Permit.  The results of that public hearing were in our favor, and the protester’s appeal was denied.  We were granted our Conditional Use Permit, but we were given an additional operating condition:  After one year of operation, we would be required to come back in front of the Zoning Administrator for a “Plan Approval” to determine if we have been complying with our operating conditions, and if our land-use privileges should be revoked.

Now, the worst-case outcome from the Pubic Hearing next week is obvious, which would mean that we could no longer serve beers in our tasting-room, and potentially not even be able to continue our brewing operations at this location.  That is definitely a worst-case situation, but probably unlikely since we have been strictly complying with our operating conditions, and have done everything we can to improve the quality of the neighborhood since we’ve been opened.  The best-case outcome means that we can keep operating for another 4-years under our current conditions (actually 3.5 years since the City took so long to process this file), at which point we will have to start the whole process over again, and re-apply for a brand new Conditional Use Permit (since our CUP was given a 5-year grant after being appealed by the aforementioned land-owner).

It is indeed very frustrating to find ourselves in the bureaucratic perpetual-motion machine of the City of LA, but in the long-run it may be just part of the price we have to pay to finally be considered a great city for Craft Beer.  Dare to dream….

1) If you can come to the hearing to show your support, that would be great!  The hearing is open to the public, so you’ll be welcome to say a few words if you choose.  If not, no worries, we’d just love to see your faces and feel the moral support.

2) If you can’t come to the hearing, you can write a letter of support, call the Zoning Administration office and tell them your opinion, or post the notice for our hearing (or a link to this blog post) on your Twitter, Facebook, or Blogs and spread the word!

Public Hearing:

I know what you’re thinking – Don’t think that you’ll sit this one out because you don’t usually like IPAs! There are actually a very broad spectrum of IPAs with some pretty amazing flavors, and this may be just the flight to take your palate to a whole new destination.

And for those of you hop-heads out there, this is the flight where you can talk hops all evening long and taste some stellar regional examples of IPAs.

This month’s forum will take place on Wednesday July 20, 2011, 7:30p-9p at the brewery. The cost of the flight will be $12 and will include a flight sheet, the flight and the best part… some QT with all your new beer-drinking friends! Please rsvp so that we’re sure to have enough beer on hand. Hope to see you all there!

The class will take place in the Eagle Rock Brewery taproom on Tuesday 6/28/11 from 7pm to 9pm. As usual, the taproom will be open at 6p for those registered in the class to come in to pickup the course materials and enjoy a pre-class beer. Cost will be $30 per person and registration can be purchased online.
